The tiny, Caribbean island of Redonda is situated some fifteen miles from
Montserrat. It had never been regarded as important enough to be claimed by any
state. In 1865 the sovereignty of Redonda was claimed by Matthew Dowdy Shiel, an
Irish trader living on Montserrat.
