The county of Tipperary is situated in the south of the country and extends from the border of Galway and the midlands to just short of the south coast. The largest inland county in the country Tipperary is a scenic County, fashioned by the Galtee Mountains, the River Suir and rich, lush, green landscape. Angling, golf, mountain walking and caves are all to hand and there's the Rock of Cashel, countless abbeys, castles, and forts to explore, experience and enjoy.
The Rock of Cashel is one of the most prominent of Tipperary's landmarks. A large group of mediaeval buildings sit atop a rocky outcrop that dominates the skyline of the town of Cashel. There are plenty of exhibitions and tours here with the town of Cashel, where Ireland's most famous King Brian Boru was crowned, itself providing plenty of pubs and restaurants to choose from in relaxing after the day.
Lough Derg is the largest of the Shannon's lakes, and is almost an inland sea. It is renowned for game and coarse angling, boating, sailing, windsurfing, and skiing. The lake is dotted with many islands, the most famous of which is Inis Cealtra - Holy Island, which is the site of a 7th century monastic settlement. Lough Derg is also popular for day cruises - for those of you who would like a short afternoon cruise, to the more adventurous who would rather charter their own boat. Lough Derg can be enjoyed and appreciated by all.
For those more interested in land based beauty the valley of the Glen of Aherlow lies between the Galtee Mountains and the wooded ridge of Slievenamuck. Historically an important pass between Limerick and Tipperary, and a notorious hideout for outlaws, Slievenamuck now offers perfect opportunities for horse riding, hiking, cycling and fishing.
The big towns of Tipperary like Nenagh, Clonmel and Thurles are home to a broad variety of amenities and Clonmel boasts one of Ireland's most famous pubs in 'Tierney's', the best pub in Tipperary for the last six years running and one of the best in the whole country. But wherever you go in Tipperary you can be sure that no matter how famous the surroundings you will find yourself treated like a king by the most hospitable inhabitants of the county.
