Saint Patrick’s Day message from President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins

I wish to send warm greetings on this St Patrick’s Day to Irish people at home and abroad and to our wider Irish family around the world.

St Patrick’s Day is an opportunity for the global Irish family, wherever they are living, to joyously acknowledge our shared heritage and culture and to celebrate and make our commitment to an Irishness of which we all can be proud. The life story of St. Patrick is one of perseverance through adversity, generosity overcoming cruelty and a people being transformed through the power of spiritual idealism. Just as St. Patrick brought a vision of hope and renewal to his people, we in our time have our own Aisling - our dream of a better, kinder, fairer shared world.

In pursuing this dream, we build on firm foundations and draw from old wisdoms. We Irish are a creative, resourceful, talented and warm people, with a firm sense of decency and justice. The natural strengths that have built and continue to enhance our reputation include our community spirit, social solidarity, rich culture, humanitarian and peace-keeping work abroad and our powerful bond with the global Irish family. The Irish are a diasporic people and we are both proud of what they have achieved in their adopted homelands and grateful for their continuing commitment to their homeland of birth or origin.

On this day, we think in particular of those Irish men and women who, over recent years, have been separated from their homeland through involuntary emigration. While wishing them happy and fulfilled lives in their new countries, we firmly hope that economic circumstances will in time allow them to consider returning home to Ireland – to their families and friends who cherish them so dearly.

On St. Patrick’s Day, it is our shared culture that is at the heart of our celebrations as we come together to enjoy the best of Irish literature, music, dance and pageantry. The fact that these forms of artistic expression enjoy international appeal enhances our sense of joy and pride. Even more joyful is that, in keeping with the inclusive and generous spirit of St. Patrick, our celebrations accommodate all ages, all communities and all ethnicities. Our love for life and our sense of fun are also constants, as is our core value system that extols pride of place, community cohesion, intergenerational solidarity and an innate spirit of hope and optimism.

In celebrating our Irishness, we also remember that the Irish are an enterprising and resilient people.  While navigating very difficult economic conditions, we refuse to succumb to defeat or fatalism. This indefatigable spirit has in the past ensured our survival and is now a source of our creativity and purpose. It will again be a vital force in regenerating a sustainable economy, securing a fairer and happier society, renewing the Republic and making Ireland a country of which we can be even more proud.

All of the Irish and those who are with them, wherever they may be and in whatever circumstances, are in all our thoughts on this day we share with the world. I wish all of you a very happy and peaceful St Patrick’s Day

Lá Fhéile Pádraig 2012 Teachtaireacht ón Uachtarán Micheál D. Ó hUigínn

Is mian liom beannachtaí Fhéile Pádraig na bliana seo a ghuí ar mhuintir na Éireann anseo agus thar lear agus ar ár muintir Éireannach sínte ar fud an domhain.

Is deis iontach é Lá Fhéile Pádraig don chlann Éireannach ar fud na cruinne, cibé áit a bhfuil cónaí orthu, ár n-óidhreacht agus ár gcultúr a aithint go bríomhar agus ceiliúradh ar dhéanamh ar ár ndílseacht don fhéiniúlacht Éireannach seo a bhfuilimid an-bhródúil as. Is ionann beatha Naoimh Pádraig agus beatha buanseasmhach in aghaidh cruatain - an fhlaithiúlacht ag fáil an lámh in uachtar ar chruálacht agus claochlú ar phobal i ngeall ar chumhacht an idéalachais spioradálta. Bá é aisling Naoimh Pádraig ná dóchas agus athnuachan a thabhairt do mhuinir na hÉireann agus ar an gcaoi chéanna tá Aisling dár gcuid féin againn inniu – aisling a bhaineann le domhan comhpháirteach atá níos fearr, níos cineálta agus níos cothroime.

Ní mór dúinn tosnú ón tús agus brí a bhaint as na seanfhocail chun an aisling seo a chomhlíonadh. Is pobal cruthaitheach, seiftiúil, éirimiúil agus cairdiúil muintir na hÉireann le tuiscint láidir macántachta agus ceartais. Cuireann ár láidreachtaí nádúrtha le clú agus cáil na tíre ar bhonn leanúnach lena n-áirítear ár spiorad pobail, ár ndlúthpháirtíocht sóisialta, ár gcultúr saibhir, ár saothar daonnúil agus síochánaíochta thar lear agus ár gcaidreamh cumhachtach leis an gclann Éireann ar fud na cruinne. Is pobal siúlach muintir na hÉireann agus táimid bródúil as a bhfuil bainte amach acu ina dtíortha uchtaithe nua agus táimid buíoch díobh as a gceangal leanúnach lena dtír dúchais nó tír thionscnaimh.

Ar an lá seo déanaimid smaoineamh ar na fir agus mná Éireannacha atá scartha óna dtír dúchais i ngeall ar eisimirce neamhdheonach le blianta beaga anuas. Cé go nguíonn muid gach saol sona sásta orthu ina dtíortha nua tá súil againn go dtiocfadh leo filleadh ar Éirinn arís nuair a thagann feabhas ar chúrsaí eacnamaíocha – chun teacht abhaile chuig a muintir agus a gcairde a airíonn uathu iad go mór.

Is é ár gcultúr comhpháirteach atá ag cróilár ár gceiliúradh ar Lá Fhéile Pádraig nuair a thagann muid le chéile chun taitneamh a bhaint as an litríocht, ceol, damhsa agus an áilleacht Éireannach is fearr dá bhfuil ann. Meallann na gnéithe seo de léiriú ealaíonta an lucht féachana idirnáisiúnta, rud a chuireann go mór lenár mbród agus gliondar ar ár gcroíthe. Is cúis áthais eile é gur féidir le hóg agus aosta, gach pobail agus daoine de gach eitneacht páirt a ghlacadh sa cheiliúradh de réir mar bhí i gceist le spiorad cuimsitheach agus flaithiúlach Naomh Pádraig. Is tairisigh iad freisin ár ngra don bheatha agus ár dtuiscint ar an ngreann, agus is amhlaidh dár gcóras bunluachanna a mhaíonn mórtas áite, comhtháthú pobail, dlúthpháirtíocht idirghlúine agus dóchas agus soirbhíochas ó dhúchas.

Agus muid ag ceiliúradh ár ndúchais Éireannaigh, cuimhnímid freisin gur pobal mór fiontraíochta agus athléimneachta iad na hÉireannaigh. Agus muid ag tabhairt faoi thosca eacnamaíocha atá thar a bheith deacair, diúltaímid géilleadh do bhriseadh nó cinniúnachas. San am atá thart chinntigh an cur chuige gan stad gan staonadh seo gur thángamar slán agus is é sin atá taobh thiar dár gcruthaitheacht agus dár rún dul chun cinn. Beidh sé sin ina fhórsa beathúil arís in athghiniúint geilleagair inbhuanaithe, agus i sochaí níos cothroime agus níos sona a bhaint amach, in athnuachain na Poblachta agus le hÉire a thiontú i dtír ar féidir linn a bheith níos mórtasaí fós aisti.

Cuimhnímid ar na hÉireannaigh uilig agus orthu siúd atá in éindí leo, pé áit a bhfuil siad agus pé tosca ina bhfuil siad, ar an lá seo a roinnimid leis an saol mór. Guím go mbeidh Lá Fhéile Pádraig an-sona agus siochánta agaibh ar fad.
