Zayed — goals are quality not quantity

By David Thorpe

When Eamon Zayed arrived by the banks of the Boyne to play for Drogheda United fans of the Louth club believed they had found a consistent goalscorer who would propel them to the Eircom League title.

In four seasons at Bray Wanderers Zayed was regularly near the top of the goalscoring charts but with almost two thirds of the season gone Eamon has yet to reach double figures for Drogheda.

What Zayed has brought to the Louthmen is the habit of scoring crucial goals. Many of the goals he has scored this season have been the difference between a draw and a win for Paul Doolin’s men. And that is the reason the Louthmen are running away with the League title.

Zayed hit two goals as the Drogs defeated second-placed St. Patrick’s Athletic 2-0 at United Park at the weekend — a result which left them eight points clear at the top of the table.

One team who continue to surprise are Shamrock Rovers. The Hoops were on the brink of extinction just two years ago but could now be playing European football next season.

Rovers were demoted to the First Division as a result of their financial irregularities but were promoted back to the top flight last season. And under their bright young manager Pat Scully they look like an emerging force in Irish football.

Their 2-0 defeat of Waterford United was enough to see them secure second place in the table and given the history of the famous Dublin club soccer fans everywhere will be glad to see Rovers return to the top of Irish football.

Weekend scores: Bohemians 2 Cork City 1; Derry City 3 Longford Town 1; Drogheda United 2 St. Patricks Athletic 0; UCD 2 Galway United 2; Waterford United 0 Shamrock Rovers 2; Sligo Rovers 3 Bray Wanderers 0.
