McDermotts goal blitz shocks Mitchells
SEAN
McDERMOTTS 3-11
JOHN MITCHELLS 1-9
Fr. Forde Cup Final
Goals win games and on Sunday at Pairc na hÉireann Sean McDermotts
produced three to help them on their way to Fr. Forde success.
Two second-half strikes from corner-forward Trevor Neville and a superb
solo score from Christopher Hayden proved sufficient in a physical, robust
encounter.
McDermotts started at a high tempo as Michael Hayden and Peter Kelly opened
the scoring. Declan Gallagher responded in kind for Mitchells with a long-range
point to delight the crowd before the score of the game gave McDermotts
a four-point lead.
A strong run from Eamon Hanlon fed Christopher Hayden who dummied his
way past the Mitchells back-line before lashing the ball into the roof
of the net. To their credit, Mitchells kicked into a higher gear as Arran
Higgins lobbed in a quick response before James Laney reduced the lead
further after some strong midfield play from Neil Casey.
Hanlon almost secured another goal for McDermotts however his break and
subsequent volley fell just wide of the post.
The pivotal moment occurred early in the second-half as Ossie Bennett
launched a long ball into the danger zone. It was met by Trevor Neville
who rose to fist the dropping ball into the back of the net extending
the lead to six points.
Lee Scanlon added his first score of the game from a tight angle before
Hayden added to his personal tally after a swift counter-attack.
At the other end, John Kinare replied with a close-range score that in
retrospect could have easily found the net. Where Kinare went close, Barry
Sharkey succeeded as a well-taken penalty reduced the deficit to seven
points. Mitchells chink of light became stronger as Thomas Hanley landed
another point before Sharkey’s close-range free reduced the deficit
further.
Yet Mitchells attacking gamble ultimately led to McDermotts third goal
to seal the victory. Trevor Neville pounced on a break from midfield to
place the ball neatly into the corner of the goal. Hanley did score a
consolation point from the dead ball before the final whistle however
the damage had been done by a McDermotts side who ran out the victors
courtesy of their clinical goalscoring.
