Schoolgirl scoops radio logo competition win

Irish student Rebecca McDonnell certainly has an eye for design.

The 13-year-old entered a competition to design a new logo for community radio station Salford City Radio and won.

Now the teenager’s handy-work will be displayed in the local area to promote Salford City Radio, which launches in September.

The competition was open to all schools across the Salford area and a massive 300 entries from 15 schools were received in the post.

Rebecca whose grandfather hails from Nenagh in Co. Tipperary attends St. Georges Hill School in the Walkden area of Manchester.

Ironically, Rebecca also designed the runner-up choice for the logo too.

The excited youngster said: “I ended up submitting six different designs in total. Once I started the first, I just kept having new ideas, so I carried on.

“I couldn’t believe it when I found out that one of my other entries had come second.”

The station launches on a new frequency in September and as well as winning instant recognition with her brilliant design, Rebecca’s voice will be one of the very first to be aired on radio on launch day.

She said: “I’m a bit nervous to be honest. I’m trying to think up what to say but I’m sure the producers will help me.

“It’s all really exciting and I can’t wait to get on air. I’m so proud that my design was chosen. I think it looks really cool.”

The winning design features the map of Salford in blue, with a friendly smiley face wearing a pair of headphones.

Salford City Radio chairman and Galway man Councillor Jim King said: “We wanted our new logo to be designed by members of the community to demonstrate that we are a community-based radio station but also because we had a feeling that we’d get many original entries, which has indeed been the result.”

The station has been running on temporary weekly and monthly licences over the past number of years but obtained its permanent five-year licence from Ofcom in July on new frequency wave 94.4fm.
