More drivers speed A NEW report has revealed more drivers
are speeding on Ireland’s roads than ever before.
The Road Safety Authority survey shows one-in-five cars on motorways travel
in excess of the 120km/h speed limit — while 27 per cent of drivers
using national primary routes break the 100km/h limit.
It also reveals some 47 per cent of drivers ignore the 50km/h limit in
residential areas where there is an increased risk to pedestrians.
The survey shows 30 per cent of vehicles using dual carriageways broke
the speed limit while just one-in-10 motorists comply with restrictions
limits on arterial roads.
In addition the overwhelming majority of articulated vehicles break speed
limits on all main roads.
RSA chief executive Noel Brett said: “We already know that the faster
traffic moves on average the more collisions there are.”
“Some drivers believe that there are acceptable or safe levels of
speeding but such a view shows that we simply do not understand speed.
We do not realise that a car driven at any speed is a lethal weapon.”
He also expressed concern that there was a significant increase in the
number of drivers who broke the speed limit in built-up residential areas. |
