| U2 take new video to
the streets of Dublin
U2 brought the streets of Dublin to a standstill as they shot
the promo video for their upcoming single Sometimes You Can’t Make
It on Your Own.
The video was shot at the Gaiety Theatre and on Grafton Street —
much to the delight of scores of fans.
The band worked once again with director Phil Joanou — who also
helmed the Rattle and Hum movie, the video for If God Will Send his Angels
and the upcoming American promo for All Because of You.
Dublin’s famous Gaiety Theatre has sentimental links for singer
Bono as his late father Bob performed there as a member of the Rathmines
and Rathgar Musical Society and the song is dedicated to him.
“It’s a portrait of him,” said Bono. “He was a
great singer, a tenor, a working-class Dublin guy who listened to the
opera and conducted the stereo with my mother’s knitting needles.
“He just loved opera so in the song I hit one of those big tenor
notes that he would have loved so much. I think he would have loved it.
I hope so.”
Meanwhile, an early photograph of U2 by Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn
has been sold at an auction in Dublin for £8,200.
The signed photo of the band posing in a field of long grass in Sweden
was taken in 1982.
Jane Beattie from auctioneers James Adams & Sons said: “We believe
it to be the earliest photo of the band by Corbijn to reach the auction
market to date.”
