Irish artists lead the way at BBC awards By John Crowley's
Planxty lead a string of Irish groups who have been nominated for the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2005.
The legendary Irish supergroup — which reformed for a live album this year — is nominated in the Best Group category.
The project Planxty Live reunited the talents of Christy Moore, Donal Lunny, Liam O’Flynn and Andy Irvine after decades apart.
Young Irish trio Uiscedwr also feature on the shortlist, while Dubliner Susan McKeown’s song Eggs In The Basket has been nominated for Best Traditional Track.
Lúnasa’s album The Kinnity Sessions is up for Best Album.
The BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards have honoured the best in folk and roots acoustic music with an annual awards ceremony since 2000.
The ceremony will be staged on February 14 at The Brewery in London, and will be compered by Radio 2 and second-generation Irish folk show host Mike Harding.
Highlights from the evening will be broadcast in a special two-hour show on BBC Radio 2 on Wednesday February 16 at 8pm. Television highlights will also be broadcast on BBC 4.
