Greetings from Galway

Looking to burn off some of all that Christmas food and drink while in Ireland?

You could do worse than checking out some of Galway’s myriad attractions.

Galway city is an important tourist centre and a gateway to the scenic areas of the county.

One of the main attractions is the Quiet Man film locations.

Co. Galway has several locations which were used in the making of this classic John Wayne movie.

People can visit the main film locations in an organised tour or join the Quiet Man Fan Club.

Just 23 kilometres away from Galway is Athenry — a medieval town steeped in history.

It was founded in the 13th century by Meiler de Birmingham who surrounded the town with a curtain wall with towers and a moat.

It is now the only walled town in Ireland whose still-intact walls are clearly visible to the approaching visitor.

For stunning scenery take a drive along the coast road from Galway to Spiddal and view the splendour of Galway Bay.

Continuing west takes visitors into the Twelve Pins of the Connemara mountain range.

No visit to Galway would be complete without some time spent in the city’s famous Eyre Square.

It’s an open green park where you can relax or view the many attractions, including the Statue of Paraic O’Connaire erected in 1935 in memory of the writer who travelled the roads with his horse and cart.

Further afield is the town of Clifden in West Galway — the location of the landing of the first trans-Atlantic air crossing by Alcock and Brown and a very scenic part of Ireland.
