Clarke Wins in Japan

By Cathal Dervan

Darren Clarke’s difficult year was forgotten temporarily when the big Ulster man sank a 35-foot eagle putt to win the Visa Taiheiyo Masters in Japan for the second year running on Sunday.

“That’s the first time I’ve defended a title successfully. I look forward to trying to make it three in a row next year,” said Clarke, who has skipped several tournaments in the past year to be by his wife Heather’s side as she battles cancer.

Meanwhile, Ireland’s challenge at the European qualifying tour school came a cropper as Eamon Brady, John Kelly, Philip Walton and Colm Moriarity all failed to earn their tour cards for next year.

And Des Smyth, twice a winner in the U.S. this year, captured his first title on the European Seniors Tour with victory in the Arcapita Seniors Tour Championship in the Middle East on Saturday.
