| Playoffs Set for Bronx Irish Soccer League
Harps, having secured the Bronx Irish Soccer League title for the second
year, began their pursuit of a double in the last competition of the year,
playing Ned Devine’s in the champions play-offs. The conditions were difficult
with a swirling wind that meant freezing conditions, and Harps came out
on top by a score of 3-1.
Harps were slow to start and paid the price in the first minute when
Ned’s took advantage with a headed goal by Marie Melly from a corner. However,
Harps came to grips with Ned’s attack and a slippery pitch and were soon
playing some of their best football of the year.
Nancy Manfredonia was having a great game a midfield and almost got Harps
back on terms with a shot that was brilliantly saved by Ned’s keeper Alison
Lineen.
In the 17th minute Harps did get back on level when a five pass move
saw Suzie Malone score her 11th goal of the season after an assist from
Lesley Grunbaum.
Ned’s were having difficult with Harps’ movement and went behind shortly
before halftime when Manfredonia got onto a Marlene Wingo pass and made
the score 2-1.
The second half was tense as both sides tried getting the next goal.
Harps defence held up well with Teresa Brink and Kathy Gradischer playing
their best games of the season.
It was captain Gradischer who sealed the victory when she rose above
everyone to head in a Gretchen Miller corner. Harps will play in the final
next week . . .
VELOCITY beat Dr. Gillbert’s by a score of 4-1. Velocity scorers were
Shawn Mattson (two), Erica Barth and Maureen Fitzpatrick. Irene C. scored
for Gillbert’s . . .
IN the shield, Docs 2 were 3-1 winners over Katie’s Cottage. Doc’s goals
scored by Mary O’Rourke (two) and Liz Murphy. Katie’s scored by Lara Kiang.
PARLOUR Moms played to a 2-2 against Kelly Ryan’s, but won on penalties,
4-2, after double overtime. Kelly Ryan’s held a two-goal lead for the first
80 minutes of the game, but Parlour Moms would not relent and tied the game
with under 10 minutes remaining off a goal by Maggie Bradley.
Kelly Ryan’s took the lead in the first half off goals from Katie McEvily
and Laura O’Kelly. Parlour’s first goal was scored by Joelle Gozlan. After
two scoreless overtimes, Parlour prevailed in the penalty kick shootouts,
4-3.
