Ex-Champ Collins Decked. For Hitting Girlfriend.

FORMER world boxing champion Steve Collins appeared in court in Britain on Tuesday, accused of slamming a fridge door against his girlfriend’s head following an argument at their home.

The Celtic Warrior faces charges of common assault after police were called to his home in Shoeburyness in Essex, last week.

Collins, 39, a former WBO middleweight champion, is alleged to have thrown a draining rack and a cup at his partner Joanna Davies before storming out of the house. He is then accused of returning and assaulting her by catching her head in the fridge door.

In court on Tuesday, prosecuting counsel Samantha Lowther, said that Davies has now withdrawn her statement despite making an initial complaint to police. However, she asked magistrates for further time to review the case.

Counsel for Collins asked the bench to consider lifting bail restrictions preventing the former boxer from visiting his girlfriend, with whom he has two young children. The bench agreed and allowed him unconditional bail to return to the court on December 16.

Davies, who was in court, left the hearing hand-in-hand with the former champion, but the pair refused to comment.

Their lawyer asked for privacy after a very difficult morning in court and said they would like to get on and make their own personal arrangements and ensure that their children have a happy Christmas.

She said that Collins totally denied the allegations against him.

It is not the first time that Collins has been accused of assaulting women. His first wife, Gemma was said to have been subjected to a “reign of terror” before she ended her relationship with Collins in 1999.

She had made several complaints to the Gardai (police) about his behavior, but friends say she was too afraid to press charges.

Their difficulties hit the headlines after a fire at the couple’s luxury home in Castleknock last January. Collins was at home alone at the time. Gemma and the couple’s three children had earlier fled the house.

In March 2002 he was cleared of a road rage assault on a 70-year-old trucker.

Collins told one newspaper over the weekend that he did not know why “these allegations keep coming up against me.” He said he could not comment on why his partner made the accusations in the first place.

“All I can think is that it is to do with the fame thing,” he told Ireland on Sunday. “When you are a well-known personality these kind of things happen to you.”

Collins was one of Ireland’s most successful boxers. The highlight of his career was in 1995 when he defeated Chris Eubank in a world title fight in Millstreet, Co.
