Upcoming Shows

ON Saturday, April 28 up at the revitalized Irish American Community Center (at least in the traditional music vein) outside of New Haven, Connecti-cut, there is a fascinating threesome scheduled to perform at 7:30 p.m.

Uilleann piper Jerry O’Sullivan, concertinist Tim Collins and fiddler Willie Kelly are banding together to present a night of traditional music from the Clare and Sliabh Luachra areas which reflects the musical genres from which they draw their strength.

Uniting the three of them beyond the fact that they are three exceptionally gifted and talented musicians is their commitment to passing on what they have learned from their predecessors through vigorous teaching efforts, and each is considered among the best in that capacity as well.

And more to their credit, they do so by preserving a healthy respect for the old-timers from whom they got their music over the years, which has been obvious in their solo efforts, so it should be quite a good match.

It will be a very rare and wonderful night awaiting those who make their way to central Connecticut for this concert. Fair play to Pat Stratton (203-248-8396) and John O’Donovan (203-281-3563), two of the Nutmeg state’s stalwart keepers of the flame for another in a series of brilliant concerts and ceilithe up there in recent months. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. The IACC phone is 203-469-3080 and website is www.iacc-ct.com.

Last year a fair amount of attention was given the banjo in Irish music under the banjaxed concert heading both in Manhattan at the Moravian Church, and later in Limerick at Dolan’s Warehouse under the auspices of the University of Limerick though each was independently produced.

Following out of that, the Irish Arts Center in Manhattan is offering an Irish banjo day on Sunday, April 29 from 1 to 5 p.m. that will consist of workshops on the tenor banjo (1-4:30 p.m.) followed by a recital from 4:30 to 5 p.m.

Tipperary brothers Donie and Pio Ryan will offer the special workshops that day, which will also feature an audio-visual lecture from Dr. Mick Moloney on the history of the banjo in Irish music. Pio Ryan also has a regular banjo class there at the center (www.irishartscenter.org) in the lineup of ongoing music classes on weeknights throughout the year.

For more details and reservations for the workshops call 212-757-3318, ext. 204.
