Woodside Women Warned

By Georgina Brennan

AN ATTACKER on the loose in Queens may be targeting Irish women, but police have little information about the suspect.

Karen Kirwan, 35, was walking home from Sean Og’s bar on Sunday in the early hours of the morning when she was jumped.

“I heard keys jangling as I came up to 60th and Woodside Avenue, and then someone grabbed me, I turned around and tried to fight him off. He was about 6 foot and I’m 5 foot 2. I was screaming,” Karen told the Irish Voice by telephone on Monday.

Fortunately, there were two men walking nearby and heard her screams. They started shouting and approaching when the attacker ran off.

“They asked me was I okay, and only for them I was,” she continues.

“Then a man from a nearby apartment came out and said he had seen the man waiting in the dark, he told me he knew the man was up to no good and we decided to call the police. I called 911 and they took my details but I never heard anything from the police. Now I’m worried an attacker may be on the loose and they aren’t looking for him.”

A spokesperson for the NYPD says no investigation has been launched into the incident because Karen didn’t stay on long enough for 911 to trace her call. They urge Karen to call into her local precinct and make a complaint.

“It’s better if someone comes in and makes a complaint,” said an NYPD spokesperson. “We need to get it all documented so that we can launch an investigation, people need to know to stay on the line so they can be traced and stay at the scene of the crime if possible,” he said. Karen describes her attacker as male, white with black hair and a black moustache.
