McIlroy Top Amateur

NORTHERN Ireland’s Rory McIlroy was also celebrating at Carnoustie after he won the silver medal awarded to the top amateur at the British Open.

“It’s been a great performance at my first major, my first Open championship,” said the 18-year-old McIlroy. “I’m sure I’ll get more attention after this week and I’m sort of prepared for this, but it will be a bit of a change for me.”

McIlroy, 18, from Holywood, Co. Down, finished the tournament at five over. He finished the last hole with a birdie and received a huge round of applause from the gallery.

He will spend time in Dubai on vacation and then prepare for the Walker Cup in September at Royal County Down, after which he will turn professional.
