NY GAA - Offaly Win Game of the Day
May 8, 2008
By Eugene Kyne
Offaly 6-5 Tipperary 3-10
NINE goals in 24 minutes of action tell you all you need to know about this game. Easily the match of the senior football tournament, with both sides going all out for goals and getting them.
Kieran Bergin was again Tipp’s go to guy for scores, and he didn’t disappoint. John Madden was again doing the business as he helped himself to a goal, while Mike Stretch and Dave Loughnane chipped in with points.
Offaly were also not shy in the scoring department, with Damien Reilly being their main tally man. Brian McNaughton and Damien Clifford and Eunan McKillof were also quite capable of making and taking their scores.
The first half was very even until the last five minutes when Offaly thundered in for two goals to give them a four point lead at the break.
Goals were to prove Offaly’s winning formula as they added another three to their tally in the second half, while Tipp were being forced away from the faithful goal and forced to go for points. Offaly again finished this half with two late goals to give them a win by four points and a place in the final, where they awaited the winner of Wexford and Father Toms.
Offaly: Alan Gleason, Ritchie Gaule, Damien Reilly, Willie Kiley, Dan Dwyer, Donal Broderick, Eunan McKillof, Brian McNaughton, Damien Clifford, Kevin McKay, Philip Wickham.
Tipperary: Dave Loughnane, John Madden, Kieran Bergin, Willie Hackett, Mike Stretch, Mike Kennedy, Brendan Liffey, Mike Maher, Gary Donoghue.
