DeMarco’s New CD
May 15, 2008
From the Hob by Paul Keating
SINCE many of his friends in the Irish music scene have been awaiting Tony DeMarco’s new CD for a number of years already, it will take a few release launches to properly fete its arrival on the Smithsonian Folkways label under the title of The Sligo Indians, which humorously relates back to his long-hair hippie days the New York native enjoyed in Coleman country in Co. Sligo. The first celebration will take place this Friday at the Blarney Star concert at NYU’s Glucksman Ireland House (www.blarneystar.com) at 9 p.m., where Tony will have Fionn O’Lochlainn on guitar, Ivan Goff on pipes and Anna Colliton on bodhran to accompany him as he previews many of the 15 tracks.
DeMarco’s place among the New York-based, Sligo-style fiddle players has long been established, whether he was playing along side the late Paddy Reynolds and Andy McGann, or his peer Brian Conway and their respective protégées, Pat Mangan or Matt Mancuso.
Considered the doyen of Irish music sessions in New York, Tony’s musical curiosity and technical skills have allowed him to travel far afield around the country and in Ireland, where he is welcome whenever he picks up the bow and fiddle, equally at home in blue grass and rock circles as well at the pure drop.
