Godot Fans Rewarded for Waiting

By Bridget English

New York audiences may have waited for nearly ten years for the return of the Gate Theater Dublin’s production of Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, but it was worth it.

Beckett’s masterpiece was performed by the Irish theater company October 24-28 at NYU’s Jack H. Skirball Center for the Performing Arts to rave reviews.

The Irish Times called the production, “definitive, not just in Irish but in global terms. It is probably the closest we will ever get to the perfect official Godot.”

The all-Irish cast provided the necessary accent for the play. “Could you imagine Sean O’Casey performed with English or American accents?” questioned Gate actor Alan Stanford. “The words seem to find their home in our accents. I’m 40 years in the business and I have probably learned more and enjoyed more doing this play than anything else. It’s the most remarkable experience. It constantly surprises me as a play.”
