Boston Honorees

James Brett
New England Council

James T. Brett is President and CEO of The New England Council, the oldest regional business organization in the U.S., which promotes economic development in the region. The Council works closely with Capitol Hill to influence public policy.

Before joining the Council, Brett was a Massachusetts state representative for sixteen years. He is a former member of the President’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities and currently serves as chairman of the Massachusetts Governor’s Commission on Mental Retardation.

Brett is a past recipient of the “Irishman of the Year” award from the Friends of the John F. Kennedy Library. He sits on the board of directors of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation and is a trustee of Catholic Charities of Boston. He received a 2006 Solas Award from the Irish Immigration Center. Bay Cove Human Services of Boston named a home for disabled adults “Brett House” in his honor in 1996.

Brett’s parents – Henry and Mary Ann (Brennan) Brett – immigrated from Tubbercurry, Sligo to Boston in the 1920s, where the six Brett
children were raised. Jim and his wife Patricia reside in Dorchester, Massachusetts.

Carolyn Casey
Timberland

Carolyn Casey is the senior director of External Relations and helps develop and innovate Timberland’s model of “Commerce and Justice” – the company’s enduring commitment to social and environmental accountability.

As a member of the Corporate Social Responsibility management team, Casey helps drive the integration and communication of strategies that strengthen communities, sustain the planet and foster civic action.

Prior to joining Timberland in 2000, Casey spent a decade in political, legislative and non-profit management positions most recently as the director of National Affairs for City Year.

A resident of Charlestown, Massachusetts, she graduated from the College of the Holy Cross with a BA in English and received her Master’s in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. A third-generation Irish-American, Casey traces her roots to Roscommon on her father’s side and Leitrim and Cork on her mother’s. She is a supporter of The American Ireland Fund, and describes one of her most vivid memories of a trip to Ireland, “visiting with Catholic and Protestant youth and witnessing their steadfast resolve and determination to secure peace.”

Joe Corcoran
Corcoran Jennison

Joseph Corcoran is founder and CEO of Corcoran Jennison Companies. Corcoran and his partner, Gary Jennison, have successfully developed, owned and managed over $2 billion in property over the last 35 years.

A main focus for Corcoran is the development of mixed-income housing and creating low-crime communities for the poor. These communities, which include a management team and social services, and involve the residents in all decisions about their living environment, have been very successful and are the subject of A Decent Place to Live published by Northeastern University Press in 2000.

Corcoran, the son of Irish immigrants from Roscommon, has dual Irish and American citizenship. He is a board member of The American Ireland Fund and supports the Irish Chamber of Commerce, the Irish Cultural Center of New England, and the Boston Irish Famine Memorial Committee. He also remains involved with his alma mater, Boston College, where he serves on the Board of Trustees and heads the Buildings and Properties Committee.

Corcoran has been married to his wife Rosemary, from Dorchester, for 44 years. The couple has seven children and fifteen grandchildren.

Michael Costello
PricewaterhouseCoopers

Michael Costello is managing partner of the PricewaterhouseCoopers Boston office, which is the second largest U.S. office of PricewaterhouseCoopers with over 2,200 employees. Prior to becoming Boston Managing Partner, Mike held leadership positions within the Northeast and National Tax practices of PwC for several years. 

Throughout his 35 years as a tax and business advisor, Mike has served clients in numerous industries including real estate, high technology, and private equity. Costello is vice chairman and treasurer of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. He is also a member of the executive committees and board of directors of the Massachusetts Business Roundtable, Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation, and Boston Public Library Foundation.

He graduated from Boston College with a BS in accounting in 1971, and received a Master’s of Science in Taxation from Bentley College in 1979. Michael is a first-generation Irish-American whose family roots are in Roscommon and Galway. 

He and his wife, Kathy, have three daughters and he has traveled to Ireland eight times to visit family and enjoy links golf. This past summer he visited Ireland with his mother and two brothers to host a cousins’ reunion in Ballinasloe, County Galway. 

Ralph Crowley
Polar Beverages

Ralph D. Crowley is president and CEO of Polar Beverages, an independent soft drink bottling company based in Worcester, Massachusetts.

He is the fourth generation of his family to lead the company. His great-grandfather Denis M. Crowley, bought the wholesale bottling division of the Bieberback firm in 1916. In 1992, after 25 years in the family business, Ralph was named President & CEO.

The company creates many of its own beverages, including a full line of sodas, seltzers and mixers, while also bottling other regional and national brands.

Crowley went to high school in Sydney, Australia, earned a BA in History/Government from Bowdoin College, Maine, and an MBA from Clark University, Worcester. He sits on the board of the Seven-Up Bottlers’ Association, Massachusetts Food Association, and Vi-Jon Laboratories, Inc., and he is chairman of the board of the American Beverage Association. He is also treasurer of the Wachusett Mountain Ski Area Association.

Crowley has Irish roots on both sides. His father’s family hail from Cork and his mother’s family, the Hallorans, come from Kerry. He is married to Jean and the couple has five children.

John Cullinane
The Cullinane Group

John Cullinane is the founder of Cullinane Corporation, the first software products company in the world to have an IPO, be listed on the New York Stock Exchange, and reach $1 billion in valuation.

Beginning in the early 1990s, Cullinane worked extensively with indigenous Irish software companies such as Iona Technologies, and helped them enter the U.S. market. He also spent considerable time promoting the peace process in Northern Ireland via jobs and economic development, and was appointed Economic Counsel to the City of Belfast.

He received an honorary degree from the University of Ulster, which was conferred on him at the JFK Library in Boston. It was the first honorary degree ever awarded outside of the island of Ireland by the university.

Cullinane is chairman of the board of LiveData, Inc., which is doing pioneering work in real time data integration and display in the Operating Room of the Future at Massachusetts General Hospital. This technology makes the “virtual” hospital possible by bringing the hospital to the patient with telemedicine and telementoring via the web.

Cullinane’s parents were from Dunmore East, County Waterford. He and his wife, Diddy, have two children.

John E. Drew
Seaport Companies

John E. Drew is president and CEO of Seaport Companies, which operates four related yet distinct businesses in Boston, including the Seaport Hotel and World Trade Center.

He is also founder and president of The Drew Companies, a Boston-based real estate management and development company recognized internationally for its innovative projects and he is chairman of Trade Center Management Associations, which manages the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C.

Drew serves on the board of directors of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, Boston History Collaborative, Boy Scouts of America and Boston Public Library Foundation. He is a member of the North American Board of the Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business, U.C.D.

Drew graduated from Stonehill College, obtained a master’s degree from Boston University and holds an honorary degree from Newbury College. He has won numerous awards from the Massachusetts Hospitality Association and the Boston Jaycees, and he was named “Developer of the Year” in 2002 by the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties.

He and his wife Kathy live on Boston’s South Shore with their son and three daughters.

Anne Finucane
Bank of America

Anne Finucane is Global Marketing & Corporate Affairs executive at Bank of America and head of the company's environmental council.

Before that she was president for the Northeast, and was responsible for executing strategic transition plans for New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania when FleetBoston Financial merged with Bank of America.

Finucane joined Bank of America predecessor FleetBoston Financial in 1995 as chief marketing officer, first as senior vice president and then from 1999 as executive vice president. Prior to joining FleetBoston, Finucane ran her own consulting firm after holding a number of executive positions with advertising giant Hill, Holiday, Connors, Cosmopulos, Inc. in her 14 years with the company.

Finucane serves on the advisory board of Urban Improv that educates at-risk youths through theater. She also serves on the Taoiseach’s Economic Advisory Board and is a member of The American Ireland Fund.

Finucane traces her heritage on both her father’s and mother’s side to County Cork. She lives in Lincoln, Massachusetts with her husband, columnist Mike Barnicle, and their children.

David Greaney
Synergy

David Greaney is founder and president of Synergy, a Boston-based real estate development and management company specializing in the investment of Irish equity in U.S. real estate.

Synergy sources acquires and manages assets throughout New England and is recognized for its innovative investment philosophy and commitment to superior returns. Additionally, the company has completed a number of successful residential development projects and maintains ownership interests in several hospitality ventures.

Greaney is a certified public accountant in Massachusetts and has previously held positions at PricewaterhouseCoopers and Harvard University.

He is actively involved in the Massachusetts Special Olympics, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma societies. He also serves on the board of directors of the Ireland Chamber of Commerce U.S.A., and is involved with various other Irish organizations throughout the region.

Born in Limerick, Greaney is a graduate of University College Dublin. He currently resides in Boston with his wife Kathy.

Philip C. Haughey
The Haughey Company

Philip Haughey is president of the Haughey Company, Inc., a family real estate investment, development and management firm located in Boston, Massachusetts.

The company’s interests include retail, commercial and industrial properties in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Maine.

A graduate of Harvard College, Haughey currently serves as vice president and governor of the Harvard Club of Boston. In 2005, he was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Ulster.

Philip is a second-generation Irish-American who traces his roots to Keady, County Armagh on his father’s side, and Cork on his mother’s. He is lucky enough to visit Ireland yearly and is involved with a number of Irish organizations.

He is a member of the North American Board of the Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business, U.C.D as well as the Erie Society of Boston and Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, among others. Haughey is also the Chairman of both the Friends of Harvard Celtic Studies and the Friends of the Boston Irish Famine Memorial.

Phil and his wife Peggy live in Newton, Massachusetts. They have four children and ten grandchildren.

Sean M. Healey
Affiliated Managers Group, Inc.

Thomas Hynes became president and chief executive officer of Meredith & Grew in 1988. A full-service commercial real estate firm, Meredith & Grew provides brokerage, development and advisory, counseling and valuation, capital markets, and property and asset management services to a broad range of clients. Hayes, who has over 41 years of experience in the sale, leasing and consulting of commercial, industrial and institutional real estate, joined the company in 1965. Prior to joining Meredith & Grew he served as a real estate advisor to the New Boston Garden Development Corporation. Hynes has served as a trustee or director at various companies and organizations, including: Prentiss Properties Trust, New World Bank, Marine Biological Laboratory, and Sea Education Association. A graduate of Boston College, Hynes holds an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Emmanuel College, where he is a former chairman of the board of trustees. He is married with two children.> Sean M. Healey is president and chief executive officer of Affiliated Managers Group (AMG), an asset management company with equity investments in a diverse group of growing, mid-sized investment management firms.

AMG manages approximately $202 billion in assets in three hundred investment products across a broad range of investment styles and distribution channels.

Healey joined the company in 1995 as executive vice president, and was named president and chief operating officer in 1999. He became president and chief executive officer in 2005 and has been a director since May, 2001. Prior to joining AMG, Healey was a vice president in the Mergers and Acquisitions Department at Goldman Sachs & Co., where he focused on financial institutions. He also serves as a trustee of the Peabody Essex Museum and Shore Country Day School.

Healey earned a JD from Harvard Law School, an MA from University College Dublin and an AB from Harvard.

A fifth-generation Irish-American, Healey traces his roots to County Limerick. He is a member of The American Ireland Fund and is married to the outgoing Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts, Kerry Healey, who has a Ph.D. from Trinity College, Dublin.

Thomas J. Hynes

Thomas Hynes became president and chief executive officer of Meredith & Grew in 1988. A full-service commercial real estate firm, Meredith & Grew provides brokerage, development and advisory, counseling and valuation, capital markets, and property and asset management services to a broad range of clients.

Frank Keefe
The Keefe Company

Frank Keefe is president and chief executive officer of The Keefe Company, a Boston-based business specializing in real estate development, project management and community planning.

Keefe is the visionary behind Boston’s upscale Hotel Commonwealth, a luxury property in Kenmore Square, which he developed with Boston University. The 150 room hotel, which Keefe says was partially inspired by Dublin’s Shelbourne Hotel, was voted one of the Top 10 best new hotels in the world by Forbes.com in 2003.

Before forming his own company, Keefe was senior vice president of JMB/Urban Development Partners. He also served as the city planning director for the City of Lowell. Keefe was also secretary of administration & finance under Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis, and director of the office of state planning.

He has an undergraduate degree from Fordham College, and a BA and MA from Merton College of Oxford University.

Keefe’s maternal grandparents came from Clonmany, County Donegal, and his father’s family is from Cork.

Peter Meade
Blue Cross and Blue Shield

Peter Meade is a respected leader in Massachusetts with proven accomplishments straddling the state’s business, civic and political arenas.

As the executive vice president of corporate affairs for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts, he has been an advocate for improving the state’s health care system.

Prior to joining Blue Cross, Peter served as president and CEO of the New England Council and as vice president at Warner Amex Cable Communications. Earlier in his career, he served as the public safety coordinator for the City of Boston during federally mandated school desegregation, and as commissioner of Boston’s Parks and Recreation department.

He is chairman of the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy, and the immediate past chairman of Catholic Charities. He is also a board member of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, the Anti-Defamation League of New England and the New England Council.

A lifelong Bostonian whose parents emigrated from County Clare, Meade received the 2005 Humanitarian Award from the Irish Cultural Center of New England. Peter lives in Boston with his wife, Rosanne Bacon Meade.

Arthur McCabe
McCabe and Associates

Arthur McCabe is president of McCabe and Associates and has worked extensively with senior executives, owners, and families, of closely-held corporations.

In the course of his law work, he has practiced extensively with local, state, and federal agencies, and state and federal courts, particularly with regard to economic development matters and the creation of strategic alliances and public/private partnerships for the accomplishment of his clients’ personal and business objectives.

He has served as advisor to governmental institutions and business and political leaders, and participated in numerous public and private trade missions and fact-finding trips to the North, West and Border Counties of Ireland.

A third-generation Irish-American who traces his roots to counties Longford and Louth, McCabe has a JD degree from Boston College Law School and an MBA from Boston University.

In 2006, he was named one of the “Top 50 people contributing to the Regeneration of Belfast.” He is a founding member of the Irish Foundation and is also a member of Irish Traditional Industries Co-op.

His wife owns an art gallery specializing in original paintings by artists from Ireland, primarily from the North. The couple has three daughters and live in Andover, Massachusetts.

Frank McCourt Jr.
McCourt Company & LA Dodgers

Frank McCourt is president and CEO of The McCourt Company, a Boston real estate development business specializing in major commercial building properties. He is also the owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball organization.

McCourt’s great-grandfather founded The McCourt construction company in 1893, and it has remained in the family ever since. In 1977 his father, Frank McCourt, founded The McCourt Company, a spin-off of the original construction business. McCourt is not the first in his family to own a major league franchise, as his grandfather was part-owner of the Boston Braves. McCourt previously attempted to purchase the Red Sox and the Angels and is a lifelong baseball fan and longtime Red Sox season ticket holder.

He is on the Board of Regents at Georgetown University, where he graduated in 1975. He also sits on a number of civic boards, including the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, the Boston Municipal Research Bureau, and the Make a Wish Foundation.

He and his wife Jamie have four sons.

Patrick McGovern
IDG Group

Patrick J. McGovern is the founder and chairman of International Data Group or IDG. IDG is the world’s leading technology publishing, event management and research company.

McGovern began his publishing career when he became an editor at Computers and Automation, the first U.S. computer magazine. In 1964, McGovern founded the International Data Corporation, which has become the leading source of reliable statistics on information technology. At IDG, McGovern has supervised the launch of more than 300 technology related magazines, 450 websites and 1,200 conferences and expositions in over 85 countries worldwide.

In 2004 McGovern was named one of the top “Entrepreneurs We Love” by Inc. magazine. McGovern’s other awards include the Henry Johnson Fisher Lifetime Achievement Award from the Magazine Publishers of America, the Top Innovator in Business Publishing Award from BtoB Media Business magazine.

McGovern, a graduate and trustee of MIT, traces his Irish heritage to counties Cavan and Mayo. He is married with four children.

John McGrail
Mayo Group

Since founding the company more than a decade ago, John Mcgrail has successfully led Mayo Group from its critical first stages to its current success as one of the industry’s fastest growing real estate investment and development firms.

With over 18 years experience in the construction and real estate industries, he is the driving force behind Mayo Group’s extensive growth. Under John’s leadership, the company’s portfolio has grown to include thousands of residential units and more than 1.5 million square feet of commercial property both in the Boston area and across the U.S.

After emigrating from Ireland to the U.S. at age 20 and spending time developing his skills in the construction trade, John bought his first property in 1991. He then started a construction and remodeling business that grew to include property maintenance and management. That company transformed into JM Realty, and then Mayo Group (named after County Mayo, Ireland, where McGrail grew up).

A resident of Boston, John is extremely active in the community and has received numerous accolades for his personal and business successes including The Irish Immigration Center’s Solas Award; inclusion in the Boston’s Business Journal’s “Top 40 Under 40,” and The Ireland Chamber of Commerce’s prestigious Emerald Award.

Brian T. Moynihan
Bank of America Corporation

Brian T. Moynihan is president of Global Wealth & Investment Management, a Bank of America corporation division, which delivers comprehensive financial solutions to more than two million individual and institutional clients worldwide.

He is responsible for the division that includes Premier Banking & Investments, The Private Bank of Bank of America, and Columbia Management and Affiliates, which have more than $500 billion in assets under management.

He joined Bank of America in 2004, following its merger with FleetBoston Financial. At Fleet, he led Brokerage & Wealth Management after leading Fleet’s Internet strategy. Before that, he directed the corporation’s strategic development for six years, overseeing all mergers and acquisitions.

Moynihan is a graduate of Brown University and the University of Notre Dame Law School and serves on the Boards of Directors of YouthBuild Boston and The United Way of Massachusetts Bay.

Moynihan is a fourth-generation Irish-American with roots in counties Cork and Kilkenny. He is a big fan of U2 and James Joyce and has visited Ireland four times, including one trip to play rugby in Dublin. He lives in Wellesley, Massachusetts, with his wife and three children.

James M. Murphy
Q10 Capital

Jim Murphy is chairman of Q10 Capital, LLC, a national mortgage banking firm, owned and operated by 14 independent mortgage bankers, and founder and chairman of New England Realty Resources. In 2005, Q10 closed nearly $6 billion in commercial mortgages and Q10 is currently the 5th largest mortgage servicing company for the life insurance industry.

His 35-year career in finance began in the life lnsurance industry with MassMutual Life Insurance and continued through 1982 with UNUM Life Insurance Company. Murphy was the 2002 chairman of the Mortgage Bankers Association of America and is a former member of its board of directors.

He is also a member of the board of the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund, the largest independent scholarship organization for students working at Massachusetts golf courses.

James is a third-generation Irish-American and is a member of Ireland Chamber of Commerce, USA. He has earned both a BA in Economics and an MBA from the University of Massachusetts. A regular visitor to Ireland, he is married to Barbara Ann and has one daughter, Michelle, and son-in-law, Michael.

Thomas P. O’Neill
O’Neill and Associates

Thomas P. O’Neill, III is chief executive officer of O’Neill and Associates.

Based in Boston, he directs strategic planning and management of the company’s marketing efforts, long term growth and business opportunities.

Previously, O’Neill was president of McDermott/O’Neill & Associates, a major government relations and communications consulting firm, as well as FH/GPC. From 1975 to 1983, O’Neill served as lieutenant governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He also served on the U.S. State Department Ambassadorial Screening Committee and was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

O’Neill currently serves as chairman on the Board of Trustees for the Mount Auburn Hospital. He also sits on the Board of Trustees for Boston College and on the Board of Directors for CareGroup.

O’Neill received his bachelor’s degree from Boston College and earned his master’s in public administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He is a fourth-generation Irish American with roots in Donegal, and a Director of The American Ireland Fund.

Patrick J. Purcell
Herald Media Inc.

Patrick J. Purcell is president and publisher of the Boston Herald and president of Herald Media, Inc.

Beginning his career with the New York Daily News, Purcell joined News Corporation in 1980 as associate publisher of the Village Voice. He progressed through the ranks and in 1994, he purchased the Boston Herald from Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation. In July of 1996, Purcell launched jobfind.com in response to the need for qualified candidates in today’s job market. Purcell’s most recent accomplishments include his 2001 purchase of the Community Newspaper Company from Fidelity Capital. In May 2006, he sold Community Newspaper to Gatehouse Media and retained ownership of Boston Herald, bostonherald.com and Women’s Business.

A graduate of Hofstra University School of Business, Purcell has an MBA in addition to a BBA from St. John’s University. He is on the Executive Committee of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, the board of directors of The American Ireland Fund.

A first generation Irish-American, Purcell traces his roots on his father’s side to Wexford. His wife Maureen’s family comes from Cavan. They live in Weston, MA and have four children and five grandchildren.

Sheila Ryan
Intel Capital

Sheila Ryan is a director at Intel Capital where she makes investments in early stage technology companies that have a strategic interest for Intel Corporation.

Since joining Intel Capital in 2000, Ryan has evaluated several hundred companies, invested in 38 and completed over 50 transactions, including the largest deal ever done by Intel Capital, a $600 million investment in Clearwire.

Prior to Intel, Ryan spent 12 years at Salomon Brothers as a vice president, Financial Institutions Group and was the manager in charge of the Structured Product Group in the Boston office. Earlier in her career, she worked with the chairman’s office at Bank of America on a variety of strategic initiatives related to re-engineering the Wholesale Bank.

Ryan earned her BA in Economics from Stanford University, graduating with distinction. While there, she played varsity soccer and was a member of the sailing team.

She is a first-generation Irish-American. Her mother, Kathleen, is from Longford and her father, Patrick, is from Dublin. She resides in Brookline, Massachusetts with her husband Tony Lyons and her two children.

Mike Sheehan
Hill, Holliday

Mike Sheehan is president and CEO of Hill, Holliday, a marketing and communications agency with over 650 employees.

He joined Hill, Holliday as group creative director in 1994 and became executive creative director in 1996. After a stint at DDB Chicago as executive creative director, he rejoined Hill, Holliday in 2000 as president and was named CEO in 2003.

As a copywriter and creative director, Sheehan has won virtually every national and international award for excellence: The Grand Clio, One Show Gold, Cannes Lion, Best of Show at Hatch and Communication Arts.

He attended the U.S. Naval Academy and earned his BA in Saint Anselm College, where he serves as chairman of the Board of Trustees. He is also on the Board of Trustees at Cardinal Cushing School, a school for developmentally disabled children in Hanover.

A second-generation Irish-American, he traces his heritage on his father’s side to Castleisland, County Kerry and his mother’s family hails from Glenfarne, County Leitrim.

He is a member of The American Ireland Fund and the Irish Immigration Center and lives in Norwell, Massachusetts with his wife, Maureen, and daughter Catherine Claire.

John P. Walsh
Elizabeth Grady Companies

As president, chief executive officer and sole stockholder of the Massachusetts-based Elizabeth Grady Companies, John P. Walsh can assuredly be considered a financial success.

Elizabeth Grady is the largest skincare salon network and employer of estheticians in the U.S. The company also operates a U.S. Department of Education accredited School of Esthetics, which graduates over 150 expert estheticians and makeup artists annually.

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Walsh is a second-generation Irish-American who lists U2, Oscar Wilde and W.B Yeats among his favorite Irish artists. He traces his family roots to Oughterard, County Galway on his father’s side. He has traveled back to Ireland twice and had the opportunity to visit his grandparents’ home as well as the church where they were baptized.

Walsh notes that “My family and I were born wealthy…and money had nothing to do with it.” A member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, he lives in North Andover, Massachusetts, with his wife and three children.
