110th Birthday

The oldest living Irish person just turned 110. “Maybe I’ve been around a little too long now,” said Catherine Furey, who lives at St. James Plaza nursing home in Long Island, New York. Born in Co. Roscommon on April 7, 1893 Catherine left Ireland for New York in 1913.

She met her husband Simon Furey in 1927 and the couple had two children, Joan, now aged 74, and Paul, 69. Her husband died in 1943, and Catherine went back to work as a housekeeper. She is a grandmother of nine and a great-grandmother of 13.

To what does she credit her long live? “I never took a cigarette, I never took alcohol and I only had one husband,” she told Georgina Brennan of the Irish Voice.
