Wexford Tourism Chief Executive Amy Whelan explains why the
county is the ideal holiday destination
County Wexford in Ireland’s sunny south east extends a warm Irish
welcome.
Just a short journey across the sea and you reach a microcosm
of all that is great in Ireland — stunning coastline, mountain scenery,
great festivals, superb restaurants and pubs, friendly people and
a range of activities for every day of your holiday.
Unspoilt, just waiting discovery, it is distinctly different
and has a landscape, history, culture and character undeniably its
own.
Equestrian activities, angling, coastal walks, heritage, water
sports and cycling are just some of the attractions of the area.
The coastline is one of the special attractions of this, Ireland’s
sunniest corner. Pretty fishing villages, bird-watching, snorkelling
and swimming are part of the area’s maritime life.
Right beside the coast in Courtown, Wexford’s newest and most
exciting centre is the Forest Park Leisure Centre, with fun slides,
kiddies pool, gym, jacuzzi and a sauna.
Wexford is synonymous with bird-watching and there is no better
base than Hotel Curracloe, where fantastic value packages are on
offer throughout the year. It is situated beside one of Wexford’s
finest beaches and close to a nature reserve which houses a third
of the white-fronted goose population of the world during the winter!
The hotel is newly refurbished, with fresh pine, and rooms with
a magnificent view. It boasts excellent restaurants and bar food.
Sport in Wexford is a way of life! If it’s not a day at the races,
it’s a good clash of the ash, and with a golf course only every
10 or 15 miles apart, you’re never short of an excuse to exercise
your competitive spirit!
Explore the hidden heritage of Wexford; many of the attractions
are family run and unique to the county. Some of the larger centres
offer audio-visual, cafés and gift shops; well worth catching are
Hook Lighthouse, The Dunbrody Famine Ship, The National 1798 Centre
and The Irish National Heritage Park.
Wexford is a shopper’s paradise. Narrow streets of boutiques,
craft shops and jewellers jammed in between coffee shops and pubs.
The current exchange rate between the euro and sterling means you
get a third more value for your money!
Access to Wexford and Ireland has never been easier, faster or
more affordable. Both Stena Line and Irish Ferries offer fast services
(90 minutes) and normal sailings (three hours) to Rosslare Harbour.
Why spend your holiday travelling when all you need is on your doorstep?
And best of all are the people — warm, friendly, funny and interesting,
they always have time for a chat.
The county offers excellent accommodation from hotels —most with
leisure facilities — to B&Bs, self-catering, caravan and camping
sites as well as guesthouses. Ferrycarrig Hotel (four stars) outside
Wexford is an ideal location to relax and unwind.
Friendly staff will ensure your stay is comfortable, you will
be spoilt for choice with the hotel’s various restaurants, and their
five-star active health club and beauty salon will ensure you leave
relaxed!
The people, the history, the coast and the country — all the
ingredients for a wonderful holiday.
