I signed up for Irish Abroad to help spread the word about the Irish Literary & Historical Society of the San Francisco Bay Area. It was founded in the 40s, they host talks by authors, historians and scholars, including local writers as well as highly acclaimed authors including Colm Toibin, Roddy Doyle, Anne Enright and Eavan Boland. Our next event is January 28th, all are welcome (free for members, $5 visitors). The events are held at the United Irish Cultural Center in San Francisco, 2700 45th Avenue..
We had a fabulous event last Septmeber with Roddy Doyle, it was a fundraiser for 'Fighting Words' the creative writing program he founded for children in Dublin. It was an inspiring evening. People of all ages attended, Roddy read from his recent work and met with everyone who wanted to meet him, it was a great night and we raised over 10K for 'Fighting Words'.
The next event is January 28th, Ronan Kelly, author and scholar, will talk about the life of Thomas Moore, the subject of his recent highly acclaimed book. For more info visit www.ILHSsf.org. Come along bring friends, the United Irish Cultural Restaurant & Bar is open at 5pm and a group of us will often wrap up the night in the Bar, so it is a good night out.
Membership in the ILHS is only $25 per year, $30 for couples, www.ilhs.eventbrite.com or visit our website at www.ILHSsf.org
